English and Media's BBC and Bradford Trip

On Tuesday 14 February, our English and Media students left for a three day trip which would take them to Haworth, BBC Media City Salford and the National Media Museum in Bradford.

Haworth was home to the Brontë sisters, well-known for Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre and Emily  Brontë's novel, Wuthering Heights. At Haworth, the students were given two talks about the  Brontë sisters and their history. The students also used their time at Haworth to create a short documentary.

The next day, the students visited BBC Media City Salford, where TV broadcasts for the BBC are presented. The group visited the Sound Studio, 6 Music and the Match of the Day studio.

They also visited the Blue Peter Studio, where the students were given the chance to do an interactive news report and weather reading, a fantastic experience for all who took part.

On the final day, the students visited the National Media Museum in Bradford, which has exhibitions on photography, film, animation and much more.

Overall the trip was a great learning experience for both the English and Media students on the trip and we look forward to more collaborative trips in the future!

Meghan Visits Itchen Cabin Crew Students

On Tuesday 14 February, former Itchen Travel student Meghan Blair visited our Cabin Crew class to talk about her British Airways training and where her qualifications have taken her since leaving college.

After leaving Itchen in June 2016, Meghan successfully applied for a job with BA and has just completed her 4 week training for flying with mixed fleet. She gets her wings on Friday 17 February before jetting off to Lagos, Nigeria, on her first flight on Friday 24 February.

Meghan studied Travel & Tourism (double award), Leisure Studies, Introduction to Cabin Crew, Travel Services and Resort Representatives during her time at the college and gave our current students excellent advice on how to successfully cope with the demanding assessment day, as well as useful guidance on British Airways standards and values to give them a heads up for when they apply for jobs in the industry after college.

Previously featured in our Alumni Series, Meghan said: "the Travel and Cabin Crew courses helped me to get the job at BA which has always been my dream." We wish Meghan all the best in her new career and look forward to following her success.

Itchen Win Rock Challenge Heat

Congratulations are in order for our Performing Arts students as they won their heat in the Southampton Rock Challenge on Monday 13 February at Southampton Guildhall.

Our students performed alongside other schools and colleges from across the Southampton area in the first of six heats in the city, beating a school from Le Havre, France, and Wyvern College to take first place for the first time.

Itchen's piece was entitled 'Stop the Violence' and explored the events surrounding The Lincoln County High School Shooting in Tennessee, 1998. It was soley created by second year Dance students Charlie Randall and Kyron Hamilton.

As well as placing  first, Itchen also received Awards for Excellence in Choreography, performance skill, soundtrack, concept, entertainment, stage crew and drama. The eight other schools competing also voted for Itchen to receive the Performers Choice Award.

Responses from Itchen students, parents and members of the community have been fantastic, with our students' performance being described as: "captivating, emotional and gripping from the start, the level of dance and acting was immense" and as "amazing choreography and performance".

The group are now going through to the Southern finals which are taking place on Friday 28 April at Portsmouth Guildhall.
