Student Support
Tutors
At Itchen College we pride ourselves on providing excellent support for our students. Each student has a Personal Tutor who advises them throughout their time at College.
Tutor Team Managers(TTMs)
Tutors are supported by Tutor Team Managers who are able to provide more detailed advice on a number of personal and academic issues. There are currently five Tutor Team Managers who are led by the Student Services Manager.

Tutor Team Managers are responsible for arranging formal communication between home and College through two Review Cycles. These begin with subject reviews and are followed by an interview with the Tutor at which targets are set. Summary reviews, with targets, are then sent home with an invitation to attend a Consultation Evening when progress can be discussed with teachers.
In addition, informal contact between parents/guardians and College is encouraged at all times.
Student Services
The Student Services Team provides further support for students, who are able to drop in to the Student Services Centre, located in the Reception area, at any time during College hours. Appointments can also be made to see the College Counsellor, who offers a completely independent and confidential service.

Study Development Centre
Additional support at the College is provided by the Study Development Centre. It is based opposite the Learning Resource Centre and aims to help you to achieve your potential. The centre is staffed by a team of teachers and learning support assistants, who are extremely well qualified and experienced.
Study support is delivered through one to one teaching, closely linked to the subjects you are studying. After initial assessment, you may be offered an initial course of 8 weekly lessons, at a convenient time to suit you. Alternatively, if you have an identified need, you may receive in-class support.
The SDC can help you with:
- Study skills
- Planning essays and coursework
- Numeracy
- Spelling and punctuation
- Access arrangements in examinations, such as extra time, reader or scribe
- Loan of equipment, such as electronic spellcheckers, dictaphones, and laptop computers
If you would like further information on any of our study support facilities please contact Anne Martineau, Study Development Centre Manager, by email: amartineau@itchen.ac.uk or by telephone: (023) 8043 5636 ext 262.
Students with Disabilities
We welcome student with disabilities and are committed to ensuring that all disabled people are treated fairly. All reasonable adjustments to provision will be made to ensure that students who have a disability are not substantially disadvantaged, and are well supported. If you have a disability, we will support you in the way that is most appropriate. This might be support in the classroom, or it could be in the Study Development Centre.
Sensory Impairments
We have considerable experience of supporting students with visual and hearing impairments, as well as a range of learning difficulties and disabilities.
In our new Assistive Technology Centre, we can help students to use specialist software which will enable them to access their courses, as well as support their learning. We have specialist Braille software, and a Braille embosser, so we are able to produce learning resources in Braille in-house. We also have a Zychem machine which enables us to produce tactile diagrams, to support the learning of students who are visually impaired.
We work closely with outside agencies, such as advisory teachers, for the visually impaired and the hearing impaired, to ensure that students’ needs are met in the most appropriate way. We also liaise with local employment services for people with disabilities, as well as the Connexions service, to ensure that students receive advice and guidance about the next step after college.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can help you.
If you would like further information, or wish to make an informal enquiry, please contact Anne Martineau, Study Development Centre Manager, by email: amartineau@itchen.ac.uk or by phone: (023) 8043 5636 ext 262.
