This course is suitable for anyone working in roles that offer specialist support for pupils’ learning.

Entry requirements

You should be at least 18 years old. You need to have a good level of literacy. Ideally you will have a relevant Level 2 qualification. You should also be in paid employment and have 18 months experience of working within a classroom.

How will I be taught?

Learners will have regular support meetings at an agreed time, with telephone and email support.

What does the course involve?

This qualification provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary, sixth form or special schools.

It covers all aspects of specialist support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher, bilingual and special needs support, and personal development and reflective practice. 

Do you need to be working to take the qualification?

Yes, you will need to be in paid employment within a classroom environment for at least 12 hours per week as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.  You will also require the support of a workplace mentor during the course.

How will I be assessed?

The course will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods.  This could include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task set by CACHE. The course requires 44 credits to complete it.


You can progress to a degree in a related discipline.

Are there any additional costs involved?

All students will pay the £120 registration fee, £5 for the course standards and a photocopying fee of £5 to cover the handouts that the tutor will provide.
