English as a Foreign Language
This course is usually for all international students in their final year who need to take IELTS for university entrance or other purposes.
Our aim is to help you obtain the highest score possible. The classes are designed to allow you to continue to improve your English with the main focus on skills and techniques needed to maximise exam band performance.
IELTS is an internationally-recognised qualification that measures your English in all four skills. The work you do at this level will, therefore, include study of a range of authentic and academic texts based around common IELTS topics, in addition to actual IELTS test materials.
You will have frequent exam practice during lessons and mock exams in November and March. You will also have a complete exam run-through about ten days before your actual exam date in order to thoroughly prepare you for the exam. IELTS students normally take the IELTS exam in May at the University of Southampton. Please note that you must take your passport with you on the day of the exam, otherwise you will not be allowed to take the exam and will be sent away.
In classes you will be trained to perform well in all modules of the exam in the time given and will be given weekly exam practice under test conditions.
For the Speaking module, as well as frequent practice in class, you will be given individual practice interviews with teachers who are experienced and up-to-date in IELTS.
You will be set homework weekly. This is a minimum requirement and you are also strongly advised to use the self-study materials available in the LRC to work independently to improve all four skills.
Of the 5.25 hours classroom time per week, you should expect at least one hour to be spent doing IELTS tasks under exam conditions.
Your teachers are very willing to give you feedback on any additional IELTS writing you do in your own time.
