This is a course for those who want to learn about how English Language is tied up with our identity and who we are, how it influences and affects every aspect of our daily lives and is connected more widely to history, society and culture.

Where can this course lead to?

By choosing an English A Level you will develop easily transferable communication skills that are desirable for most careers and higher education courses.

English graduates enter a very wide range of careers in the media, public relations, advertising, marketing, publishing, library and information services and teaching

What will I study on this course?

You will follow the AQA specification.

Component 1: Language, the Individual and Society

  • You will study how people use spoken, written, multimedia and digital forms of language to communicate
  • You will also explore the astonishing, and sometimes amusing, ways children learn how to talk and write

Component 2: Language Diversity and Change

  • You will investigate how language varies across society and changes over time, studying dialect and accents, as well as discovering the journey the English language has taken to become today’s global language
  • You will get involved in the big debates about whether accents matter and if men and women really do talk different languages!

Component 3: Language in Action

  • You will develop your research skills as you carry out some fieldwork on an aspect of language of your own choice.
  • You will also develop your original and creative writing skills as you explore the power of information, the power of stories and the power of persuasion.

Extended opportunities and enrichment

You will have the opportunity to conduct your own research project on an aspect of language of your own choice. You will also have the chance to write and take part in a programme to be broadcast on Itchen Radio. There will be a trip to the British Library with seminars on language variation and change.
