A Level

This course is for you if...

  • you are intrigued by the society we live in and the people that make up that society.

Sociology combines well with a variety of subjects including Psychology, English, Law, Criminology, Government & Politics, History, Geography, Business, Media Studies and Modern Languages. However, we have also had successful students who have studied mainly sciences who were looking for a contrasting and stimulating subject.

Where can this course lead to?

Sociology is recognised by all universities as a valid A Level for undergraduate study. Students from Itchen frequently gain places to study Sociology locally at Southampton, Winchester and Portsmouth as well as universities across the country, including Cambridge.

Sociology is particularly relevant for any career involving working with people such as social work, human relations, teaching, business, management, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, the police, journalism and marketing.

What topics will I study?

In Sociology we look at things you are familiar with but rise above common sense thinking and really try and understand the world around us. Sociology allows us to see the often-hidden connections that shape us as individuals and determine our life chances. Sociologists are also interested in how we behave around other people and what factors offer opportunities and constraints on our life chances, such as income and wealth, gender, ethnic groups and more.

You will study areas like identity and culture, families and households, education, crime and deviance and research methods. Lessons will involve studying and discussing sociological problems.

During the course you will:

  • Develop awareness and understanding of the patterns of behaviour in our society
  • Consider contemporary debates and problems
  • Learn to understand methods used to collect data
  • Explore current social issues, as well as earlier studies and theories.
  • Explore different areas of society.
