Record Numbers attend Open Evening!

A record number of visitors attended the first Itchen College Open Evening of the academic year, which is testament to the success of the College. Over 750 students and their families came along to find out about the wide range of courses available to them. Academic and admissions staff, along with current students, were on hand to discuss study options and demonstrate the friendly atmosphere that students will find at Itchen College.

Madelynne Butcher

It was with great sadness the College heard the news of the untimely death of Madelynne Butcher on the 6th August.

In her time at Itchen she contributed hugely to the life of the College. A driving force of the Student Union and organiser of many social events.

Her cheerful presence will be much missed by all who knew her.

Our thoughts are with her family.

Here come the Girls!

Ladies Football Team

Itchen’s Ladies Football team (pictured) are celebrating after winning the Hampshire Cup in a truly emphatic style by outclassing every Hampshire College to finish the 2008-2009 season unbeaten!

The popularity of women’s football in the UK is increasing and, whilst it will take a while to rise to the similar heights of its immense popularity in the US, these days women do not have to be a WAG to be recognised in football. Emma Denham, Ladies football coach, said "Ladies football at Itchen has been improving over a number of years, but now after a truly incredible season, Itchen has cemented its place at the top by winning the Hampshire Cup."

Determined and dedicated Itchen student, Katie-Marie Wood can often be seen around the College chatting with friends or in the classroom studying for her Diploma in Childcare and Education.

Confident and outgoing, there is no reason for you to think that Katie-Marie isn’t a regular hard-working student or happy-go-lucky teenager. The truth is that Katie-Marie has much more responsibility than the average student. Katie-Marie is a young carer, caring for her mother and grandparents.

Setting sail for a bright future

With such great weather currently being experienced in the South, what a great time to pursue your studies outside. Even better if that’s out on the water.

Well that’s the case for our Academy of Sport student Caragh McMurtry whose outstanding performance and dedication as a rower saw her selected as one of the six rowers to represent Great Britain at the Junior International Regatta in Munich last month, winning both gold and silver medals for two events. Caragh, pictured in her Team GB kit sporting her recent medals, said “I was surprised and relieved when I was selected for Team GB. I started trialling in 2007/2008 and I’m continually striving to improve. My performance at the trials was the best I’ve ever done.”

A Sporting Celebration

Itchen’s Academy of Sport staff and students celebrated their successes this month in their annual awards evening which saw students rewarded for their dedication and commitment to their sport. Team coaches presented awards which included the Most Improved, Players’ Player and Coaches’ Player of the Year.

This much anticipated event on the Academy’s sporting calendar saw the Ladies Football Team ditch their studs for stilettos and the boys ditch their strips for suits and ties. Glenn Colmer, Itchen’s Head of Sport said, “The awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the hard work of the students and coaches from what has been a truly successful sporting year.”

Adult Education – the road to your success

If you fancy learning something new, want to improve your skills, or gain a new qualification for work, then adult education may be the right choice for you. Itchen’s Adult Education department has a wide range of courses for all abilities. We also provides Skills for Life opportunities, the national strategy for improving adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL; and Train to Gain opportunities which are aimed at helping businesses.

Some courses are free and for those where fees are applicable, financial help available may be available to eligible learners via an Adult Learners’ Grant or bursaries.

Students explore the sights of Tokyo

Students in Tokyo

The Itchen College International School alongside St Vincent College took twenty students on a cultural visit to Japan to enable them to experience Japanese language and culture.

Staying in Tokyo, the students enjoyed opportunities to see both the traditional and modern aspects of the city, guided by Japanese senior high school students. Day trips included an exciting visit to Hakone to see the volcanic landscapes and to look out to Mount Fuji; and also a trip to Kamakura, an ancient capital of Japan, where lots of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines are situated.
