Athletics Academy Are Hampshire Colleges Champions
On Wednesday 3 and Wednesday 10 May, our Athletics Academy students were in Basingstoke competing for the title of Hampshire College champions.
The Itchen team did brilliantly with many excellent performances. It was the Athletics Academy's first trophy and a major success, as they were up against five other Hampshire colleges.
Academy athlete Mahamed Mahamed, who competes for Team GB, won the 1500m and 800m at both competitions very convincingly. Lynden Olowe won the 400m, whilst Ellie Hodgson won the 100m and 200m.
Hannah Ingram came 1st in the women's high jump and 2nd in the 800m. Jacob Thomas, one of the newest members of the Academy, came 4th in the 100m and was a part of the winning men's relay team.
Other successful performances were from Chloe Garrity, who won the women's 400m and came second in high jump, Niall Hoar who came 1st in the men's discus, Beth Burgess who came 1st in the 1500m and Lewis Thomson who came 2nd in the 800m.
It was a fantastic two days of competition and by the end of Wednesday 10 May, the students had beaten their closest competitor, Queen Mary's College, by over 100 points!
This success highlights the hard work of the athletes within the academy. This year the athletes have been supported in the academy through strength and conditioning sessions, video analysis, sport psychology sessions and sports massage.
Glenn Colmer, head of the Academy of Sport, said, 'This is the first year we have had an Athletics Academy and they have clearly made a great start.'
Well done to our Athletics Academy for their successes this year!
