Ladies Basketballers Win National Championships

Basketball Academy

From Friday 21 to Sunday 23 April, our ladies basketballers have been playing in Nottingham for the AoC National Championships.

The ladies have already won the Hampshire League, Hampshire Cup and South East England Cup so the National Championships was another chance to test their skills.

Itchen beat Wales and NC Pontefract comfortably before meeting a strong SEEVIC side, with some great defence by Emily Dodd and Millie Cavanagh pulling down every rebound meaning Itchen girls took advantage early. Harriet Goddard continued to score for Itchen giving them a comfortable 26-13 win and topping their group going into the semi-finals where they met Holy Cross.

Tactically the Itchen side got it right, double-teaming Holy Cross’ best player resulting in lots of steals and break away baskets for Chloe Garrity and Alisha Buckingham. The team won the semi-final game 22-7 and headed to the finals to face the unbeaten Moulton College.

The girls went into the game fired up, however Moulton looked strong and took the lead early. Despite being six points down the Itchen ladies rallied together and were not going to let this game go! Some great passing by Jessie Rowlands and drives by Harriet Goddard kept the Itchen team in the game. With one minute left it was anyone’s game but a great defensive effort by Emily Dodd followed by a score gave the Itchen ladies the National Championship they had been fighting for with a 15-10 win.

Basketball coach Vicky Milner commented on the game, saying, 'We have been trying to beat third spot at these National Champs for the past three years and today was our day. The girls came together and gave everything defensively, they stuck together and played as a team. Not one player could be singled out they all gave everything and contributed both ends of the court. I am proud of the effort levels and commitment they brought.'

Well done to the team for their amazing achievement!
