Athletics Academy Impresses at Middlesex University Event
Academy of Sport
There were some fantastic results as the Athletic Academy took a total of 17 athletes to the Middlesex University Indoor Championships 2018 on Wednesday 5th December.
This was the biggest team Itchen College have ever taken to the event and the trip involved an overnight stay.
The following morning the athletes were competing at Lee Valley Indoor Athletic Stadium against other universities and colleges.
Five students did tremendously well to win medals. There was a gold for Jack Higgins who won the 400m (49.93 seconds), cruising to victory with nearly three seconds between him and the rest of the runners.
Zak Mahamed won a silver in the 3,000m race, following in his brother’s footsteps as yet another talented long distance runner. He was beat to the gold medal by an athlete from the University of Brighton meaning Zak came top in the under-20 category.
There were then three bronze medallists with Ellie Hodgson and Andrew Knight both excelling in the shot putt event and Maddie Wilton taking home third place in the women’s 400m.
Elsewhere there were very good performances from several more of the Itchen athletes. Ami Carr had a fantastic run in the 400m event, taking five seconds off her personal best to finish 4th in the final. Maisie Hoskins came first in her 800m heat running a personal best. Four men competed in the 800m: Rob Patttinson, Callum Shea, Jack Barton and Harry Moon. Grace Kelly jumped 4.13m in the women’s long jump and newcomers to the athletic team Laura Jones (60m) Flamina Canali, Jazzie Gannon (shot putt) and Phomnarin Harawan (60m) competed well in their events.
Itchen also entered two relay teams with the women’s team finishing second in their heat and the men’s team coming fourth.
Overall, it was a very impressive performance from all involved and shows how the Athletics Academy is continuing to go from strength to strength.
