Sports Students Visit the Ageas Bowl and Solent University
Academy of Sport
It was a busy end to the spring term for BTEC Sport and Athletics Academy students as they attended trips to learn more about safety and nutrition.
On Thursday 22 March, all BTEC Sport students visited the home of Hampshire Cricket, the Ageas Bowl. The visit was part of students’ unit on assessing risk in sport and consisted of a tour of the stadium and a health and safety talk.
As students toured the facility, they created a questionnaire about the security, first aid and emergency procedures and as part of their assignment, they will need to look at the strengths and weaknesses of the operating procedures.
A week later, members of the college’s Athletics Academy visited Solent University to take part in a sports nutrition workshop. Students learnt about the Eatwell plate, sports drinks and recovery food, participating by making sports drinks and flapjacks of their own.
Athletes also learned more about Itchen’s strong link with Solent University, including hearing about the High Performance Academy, which several former Itchen students have been part of when going on to study at Solent.
Both trips were enjoyable and beneficial for students who can take what they learned into their future studies or plans.
