Business Scavenger Hunt Around Portsmouth
On Tuesday 7 November, 82 of our second year Business students completed a scavenger hunt around Portsmouth as part of their coursework which focused on teamwork.
Working in small teams, the students had to plan their route around Portsmouth, stopping at landmarks and places throughout the city to answer questions. Everywhere they stopped, the teams had to take a selfie, showing themselves at that specific place - landmarks included the Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Guildhall. Luckily the weather held off, with just a few spits of rain, and the walking helped with keeping warm in the chilly sea breeze.
Half of the teams moved in one direction and the other half moved in the other, with everyone checking in at Portsmouth and Southsea train station and Gunwharf Quays along the way to ensure they had kept time (and that they hadn't gotten lost!). The aim was to work in a team to answer the questions and to ensure they planned their route and made it back to the coach drop-off point along Queens Street by 1:15pm. All but one group made it back in time (the last group were five minutes late)!
The Apprentice-style task also encouraged the students to use a map and work together to figure out whereabouts in the city they were and how to get to the next checkpoint. One team even appointed one of their members the "official Googler".
Returning to college, the day will now be transcribed into an assessment as part of their coursework, where they will put all of their photos to good use alongside their reflection of the task.
The busy day was a great experience for our students, building on teamwork skills which will be essential in a business environment.
