English Literature

A Level

This is a course for those who wish to explore a range of genres and texts from different times that explore some big issues about our lives and world. It is perfect alongside other A Levels and great preparation for higher education.

This course is for you if...

...you love reading and want to read a variety of novels, poetry and drama.

...you want to explore how narratives and poetry work and would like to explore  the dramatic genres of comedy and tragedy.

...you are looking for an A Level that will give you transferable communication skills that will help almost any other course or career.

What will I study on this course?

You will follow the Edexcel specification.

Component 1: Drama

  • One Shakespeare play and one other drama from either tragedy or comedy
  • Critical essays related to the selected Shakespeare play

Component 2: Prose

  • Two prose texts on a chosen theme
  • At least one of the prose texts will be pre-1900

Component 3: Poetry

  • A selection of post-2000 poetry
  • A range of poetry from either a literary period (either pre or post-1900) or a particular poet

Component 4: Coursework

  • A free choice of two texts to compare
  • The texts may be linked by theme, movement, author or period and can be poetry, drama, prose or literary non-fiction

Your course will contain eight texts from the genres of prose fiction, poetry and drama from a variety of periods, including a Shakespeare play.

Extended opportunities and enrichment

You will have the opportunity to take part in creative writing. You will also have the chance to write and take part in a programme to be broadcast on Itchen Radio. There will be trips to museums, significant literary destinations and universities throughout the course.
