The Essential Skills group welcomed William Lamin from Pets As Therapy (PAT) to the class in November. William bought Charlie, his six year old Cavalier Spaniel, to show the group how PAT dogs are trained and guided through the hoops of becoming a therapy pet.
William taught the students many things about dogs and training them as therapy dogs. This included important things such as foods which are toxic to dogs, the need to teach the action before the cue/command and the two schools of thought about dog training and behaviour.
The students loved the opportunity to see a relationship between a working dog and a loving owner. We look forward to more exciting visits from guests in the future for our Life Skills students!
