...you are interested in criminal behaviour and want to gain an introduction to the theories behind crime in society.

Where can this course lead to?

The certificate in Criminology is a recognised qualification and after further progression could lead to a range of jobs in the legal profession or criminological field. Students can also use the qualification to progress to Level 3 Criminology and Law courses.

What will I study on this course?

The one year course consists of two units:

  • Unit 1: Describing  the main features of a range of psychological explanations of crime - This unit looks at a range of theories that try to explain crime, including social learning theories, psychodynamic theories and maternal deprivation theory
  • Unit 2: Providing an in-depth evaluation of the effectiveness of prisons and police powers - The aim of this unit will be to assess what prisons are, how they are organised, the types of prison and the numbers of prisoners. The aim and purpose of prisons will be examined to establish if they are effective forms of punishment for a modern society

Extended opportunities and enrichment

Students will be able to go on to the Level 3 course following completion of this course, and will also have access to a range of department trips to related areas such as the Houses of Parliament and The Supreme Court.
