Law & Legal Work
Vocational Level 2
This is an ideal course for anybody who would like an introduction to the English legal system.
This course is for you if...
...you enjoy current affairs and solving complex issues where the answer is not always so perfectly clear but where your judgement could affect the future interpretation of points of law.
Where can this course lead to?
This qualification is nationally recognised and can lead to a range of jobs in the legal profession or uniformed services. Students who gain a Merit or above can also use this qualification to progress to Level 3 courses.
What will I study on this course?
The course consists of three units:
- An Introduction to the English legal system - this unit introduces the English legal system to you. It is the core unit of the qualification and its focal point. It seeks to provide the necessary basic information about the operation of the English legal system and the language of the law
- Police Powers - the aim of this unit is to give an introduction to the running of the police service and their powers in the community
- Criminal Law - the aim of this unit is to introduce you to the role of criminal law in England and Wales. The unit takes a broad approach and concentrates on a range of offences and consequences of criminal behaviour
You will further develop your legal terminology, skills and knowledge relevant to identifying criminal behaviour and consequences and the ability to apply the law to situations.
Extended opportunities and enrichment
Students will have full advantage of the Itchen Job Agency, which they may use to gain part time work in a legal setting. Students may also wish to come on department trips to see the law in action, such as at the Houses of Parliament or The Supreme Court.
