Rock Challenge, opening theatres and being signed to top agencies: Another successful month for Performing Arts

Performing Arts

It’s fair to say that 2018 has got off to a flying start for Performing Arts at Itchen College.

On Friday 16 February, Southampton’s brand new theatre, the NST City Theatre, hosted its opening ceremony and Itchen students were part of one of the first ever performances at the theatre. Working alongside Zoielogic Dance Company, students presented a show called Homegrown, which celebrated Southampton as a city of makers. The show was followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

Itchen students were also part of the world premiere production, The Shadow Factory, which began showing at NST City on Wednesday 7 February. Three Acting students, Hiva Kallaveh, Jack Dennis and Daisy Collins were successful with their auditions for the show and will perform for the entire run. The show is set during the Second World War and received glowing praise in a review published in the Times newspaper and the picture used by national newspaper even included Itchen’s very own Daisy Collins.

On Tuesday 20th February, Itchen again competed in the annual dancing competition, the Rock Challenge. This year’s performance was called ‘Striking Back’ and covered the 1984 miners’ strike. The performance saw Itchen’s team win awards for Excellence in Drama, Excellence in Entertainment, Excellence in Video Production, Excellence in Choreography and Excellence in Set Design. A great effort from everyone involved!

Another Acting student, Jasmine Armstrong, has been signed to a top London agency. R.D Production & Casting Ltd aim to put talented actors into work and the company was founded by Michael Moor, who starred in several James Bond blockbusters such as The Living Daylights and Octopussy. Congratulations to Jasmine!

Finally, former student Kyron Hamilton returned to Itchen to host a workshop for Dance students. Kyron was a star performer during his time studying with us, achieving Distinction* grades across-the-board. It was great to have Kyron back with us and to get a taste of what he has learned at the prestigious Urdang Academy so far.
