Learning Support and Support4Learning

Study support is delivered through one-to-one teaching, closely linked to the courses students are taking.

After an initial assessment, a student may be offered an additional course of eight or more weekly lessons, during their independent study periods. Some students, with identified needs, may be offered in-class support.

Students can drop in to S31 any time between 8.30am - 4pm for help studying and a quiet place to work.

Support4Learning can help with:

  • Study skills
  • Planning essays and coursework
  • Numeracy
  • Spelling and punctuation
  • Accessing arrangements in examinations, such as extra time, a reader or a scribe

The services can be accessed in a variety of ways, including:

  • Referral by a subject teacher or tutor
  • Via the college screening
  • Self-referral, by calling in to S31 at any time
  • From a discussion at enrolment

Students with Disabilities:

We welcome students with a variety of disabilities and different styles of learning, and are committed to ensuring all students are treated fairly and have equal opportunity to excel during their time at Itchen.

All reasonable adjustments to provision will be made to ensure that students who have different learning requirements are supported.

In the past, we have supported students with visual and hearing impairments, as well as a range of learning differences and disabilities.

We can help students to use specialist software which will enable them to access their courses, as well as support their learning. We have access to a range of materials to support learning and do our best to match each student with the most appropriate assistive technology for them.

External Agencies:

At Itchen, we work closely with outsider agencies, such as advisory teachers for the visually and hearing impaired. This ensures that students' needs are met in the most appropriate way and each students' learning can be approached on a case-by-case basis.

We also liaise with local employment services on behalf of the students who use Support4Learning, to ensure they receive the right advice and guidance on their next steps once they have finished college.

Anne has a Diploma for Teachers of Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties, and is also an associate member of The British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA).

Sally Lloyds - Learning Support Teacher

Sally Lloyds

Sally Lloyds has a Certificate for Teachers of Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties and works closely with students in and out of lessons.

Ann Wilson - Support4Learning Co-ordinator

Ann Wilson

Ann helps to co-ordinate the Support4Learning programme for students and assist Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) in their work with students.

Sarah Cole - Study Support Co-ordinator

Sarah helps to co-ordinate the Support4Learning programme for students and assist Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) in their work with students.

Jan Clarke - Study Support Teacher

Jan works with students who are in need of extra study support both in and outside of lesson times.
