How To Travel to Itchen
At Itchen Sixth Form College, our wide and affordable travel links means students from all around Southampton and Hampshire travel to us. Our college bus pass for 2022-23 stands at just £450.
Transport for Welcome Event
Students who are joining us for our Welcome Event (Monday 4 July) will be able to use the college’s network of contract buses to travel to and from college on the day. There will be no charge for this service. You will not need a bus ticket or bus pass for the day but you must clearly indicate that you want the bus to stop by putting out your arm as the bus approaches your stop. The timings of the contract buses for college-bound journeys on the morning of 4 July are shown in this attachment and the routes are shown here.
The same seven contract buses (191-197) will be available to take you home, either at 1.30 pm (if you have finished for the day by then) or at 4 pm (if you have timetabled sessions after 1.30 pm). The return journeys will be a reversal of the incoming route, so we suggest you travel home on the same bus that you used to travel to college in the morning. So if you use the 191 to travel to college in the morning, use the 191 to get home, at either 1.30 pm or 4 pm.
The RYGO tracking app is free to download to your phone and will enable you to check routes and track your bus in real-time on the day. If you have any concerns about transport, please phone the college on 02380 435636.
Students who are involved in the football trials at Wide Lane will be taken by bus at 2.30 pm, and the bus will return players to college at 4.30 pm. A minibus will be available to help with transport home from college at this stage, if necessary.
With seven different contract bus routes, we support students travelling from Bishops Waltham; Hedge End; Whiteley; Park Gate; Gosport; Lee-on-the-Solent; Bishopstoke; Chandler's Ford; Fareham; Warsash; Hamble; Netley; Romsey; Baddesley; Swaythling; and more! See our full bus routes for more details.
On each of the 7 contract bus services, there will be a lunchtime service to and from college, in addition to the regular morning and afternoon services. This will enable students with no morning lesson to travel to college at lunchtime for their afternoon session. Similarly, if they have a morning session but no timetabled lesson in the afternoon, they will be able to get home easily at lunchtime, at no additional cost.

Contract buses will stop at any bus stop on the published route, but please be sure to ‘flag down’ the bus, so that it is clear to the driver that you want the bus to stop. The bus will not stop unless you do this. Bus timetables show estimated departure times from stops – the actual departure times will vary depending on traffic flow, so please arrive at your stop at least five minutes before the published time. On occasions, buses will be delayed due to circumstances beyond our control, but we communicate emergency issues to students by using our Twitter feed @ItchenTransport.
Students from Totton and the Waterside have the option of using Bluestar services of the 8, 9, 11 or 12 and transferring at Southampton Central Station to the Bluestar 18, which will drop students off within walking distance to the college. Bluestar has several options for bus passes and for more information, you can contact our Transport Officer or visit the Bluestar website.
If you own a car then we have free parking available on the college grounds and we issue parking permits to students who wish to use it. You will need to provide your car and insurance details to Michelle Payne, the Transport Officer, in Student Services, who will provide you with a parking permit. please be aware that there is limited parking on the college campus and your parking permit does not guarantee you an allocated space. Street parking is available on the nearby roads, but students are asked to respect local residents and to park carefully.
We have lots of parking available for bikes. It is the student's responsibility to bring a heavy duty lock, such as a D-lock, for their bike.
Motorcycles and Mopeds
Motorcycle and moped parking is available for around forty vehicles behind the North Block. This parking area is covered and is accessible via the White's Road entrance to the college.
Our nearest train station is Sholing, which is a fifteen minute walk from college along Middle Road and then right into Station Road. Bikes can be taken on most local trains, and this arrangement works well for many students.
There is a very good service from Fareham to Sholing, via Burseldon and Hamble. The train service from Totton requires a short change at Southampton Central.
Town Quay Marina is situated approximately 2.5 miles from Itchen and serves ferries from Hythe and East Cowes. Subsidised student tickets are available for Isle of Wight residents from Red Funnel.
