Itchen College women’s basketball team have two reasons to celebrate as they won two national tournaments in the space of a fortnight.
At the annual AoC National Championships held at Nottingham University at the end of April, Itchen topped their group thanks to wins over Tameside College and Richard Huish College. A narrow one point defeat to Birmingham Metropolitan College could not prevent them from qualifying for the final.
In the final, they took on the winners of the other group, Leicester-based side Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College. Itchen took a comfortable 18-11 victory to be crowned as winners of the National Championships for the second year in a row.
Then in the AoC Women’s Knockout Cup on 2nd May, Itchen were again victorious as they defeated Holy Cross College from Bury 80-68.
Alisha Buckingham was Itchen’s standout performer as she netted 20 points and Heather Johnstone also impressed as she scored 17 points.
The triumph was the culmination of a long cup run which began with a 88-28 thrashing of local rivals Barton Peveril all the way back in October last year.
The second round saw Itchen win by even more, defeating St Charles College by a remarkable score line of 111-20.
They then defeated Richard Huish and Leyton Sixth Form in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively to book their place in the final in Nottingham.
The victory saw the girls named as national champions once again.
