Students Win Gold in Chemistry Olympiad
Mathematics, Computing & Science
Students in the 2nd year Chemistry class at Itchen Sixth Form College entered the prestigious UK Chemistry Olympiad. It gives students an opportunity to develop their thinking and problem solving skills, and to test their existing knowledge of chemistry in real-world situations. The extremely challenging exam goes well beyond the A Level specification and is reflected in the grade boundaries.
Charlotte Bailey and James Willis both gained a gold award in the UK Chemistry Olympiad, only 8.2 % of candidates get a gold award. Judith Peel, Chemistry teacher spoke about the student’s achievement: “I am extremely proud that both James and Charlotte have gained this accolade. James’ superb fluency with mathematics has helped him apply his knowledge in novel situations and Charlotte’s exceptional chemistry and physics knowledge and ability to apply creative thinking to problems solving. Charlotte’s mark appears to be in the top portion of the students that gained a gold, she is planning to study Chemical Engineering at University and I know she will be successful in her chosen career.”
