Carolina arrived at Itchen Sixth Form College with excitement and anticipation, not only for her studies but for the chance to experience life with her host family.
“I have a second family now,” she says, reflecting on the special bond they formed during her time in Southampton.
In fact, her host family was so welcoming that they even surprised her upon arrival, making her feel instantly at home.
Carolina’s love for Itchen College grew over time, and one of the highlights of her return visits is seeing her former teachers, Kate and Jess, who played an important role in her development as a student. During her time at Itchen, Carolina pursued her passion for acting, eventually becoming a star performer at the College.
Beyond the classroom, Carolina made the most of her time in the UK by exploring iconic cities such as Oxford, Bath, and London. But it was Southampton that truly stole her heart.
“I miss the atmosphere and the kindness of the English people,” she shares, reminiscing about how much she loved the politeness and warmth she encountered, particularly in the way people constantly say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.
“It shocked me in a good way; the people are so grateful for life,” Carolina exclaims. “I told myself that I need to bring this back to Italy with me.”
One of the most lasting impressions Itchen left on Carolina was the support she received from her teachers.
“The teachers at Itchen really believe in you,” she says. “They made us feel like we were always good enough.”
This belief stayed with her, especially during challenging times in Italy, where she sometimes struggled with unreasonable academic expectations. Whenever she felt overwhelmed, she remembered the encouragement from her teachers at Itchen, which gave her the strength to persevere.
Now studying International Relations in Rome, Carolina reflects on her experience at Itchen with great fondness. Her advice to anyone considering an exchange programme?
“Say yes to everything!” she encourages, urging future students to embrace every opportunity and dive into new experiences with open arms.
