Welcome to IT and Digital Media

The faculty of IT and  Digital Media is known for its academic achievements and the success of its alumni, with students moving on to top universities and employment across the English and Media sector.

The faculty offers industry-standard facilities such as a green screen, editing software and our own radio station. Itchen Radio is run by students with shows being broadcast weekly via Unity 101 Community Radio.

Extra opportunities include national and international trips to places such as museums, universities and TV studios; access to a variety of guest speakers working in the It and Digital Media industries; and the chance to showcase your work through local events and exhibitions. Students also have the option to add the Extended Project Qualification to their academic programme and pursue creative writing interests.

There will also be opportunities to gain work experience, visit research laboratories at universities and take part in activities alongside technology companies.

“Over the two years that I've been a Media Studies student, we have covered a range of topics; so no matter what the class was interested in, we looked at it in detail at some point. I found it interesting how different media products evolved over time - especially in the way audiences consume and interact with them. After each topic, we are challenged to put our knowledge to the test with quizzes and assessments; I found this really helpful as it helped me to always remember everything. I also built-up good study habits from this. One of my Media Studies highlights was the New York trip which was brilliant at giving an insight into media careers. From the beginning of this subject, I have been clear on what I need to do to achieve a grade to be proud of. Overall, I've made so much progress in Media Studies since the start of college and I'm really proud of my knowledge in this field. It will help me on my path towards a career in Journalism. ”

“I moved to the UK in 2023 and began searching for a Sixth Form College that aligned with my interests and aspirations. After exploring various options, I was drawn to Itchen College - its course offerings and welcoming environment stood out to me more than any other college in the area. Since enrolling, l've never looked back. Before joining Itchen, I had only a passing interest in IT. However, after trying an IT session during a Welcome Event, / discovered a genuine passion for the subject. Over time, that interest has evolved into a clear career direction: / am now confident that my future lies in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. My work experience in IT with the NHS further reinforced this path, showing me how technology can make a meaningful impact on society. As my time at Itchen comes to an end, I feel prepared and excited to begin the next chapter - pursuing a BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering at Solent University”
