Recently rated as one of the top three livable cities in the UK, Southampton is an ideal hub for the academic and adventurous. Its advantageous location on the south coast makes it a gateway for exploration, while still harbouring a great range of cuisine, entertainment, and living history.
Known as the “Cruise Capital of the UK,” Southampton has a proud maritime tradition. The city’s connection to the Titanic, its port being a gateway to the world, and its museums, like the SeaCity Museum, offer students a deep dive into its historical significance. But going back further in time, we say the ancient City Walls, the iconic Bargate as well as the Tudor House, talismanic monuments honouring the impact of Southampton’s history that shaped the city over the centuries.
With both Solent University and the Russell Group University of Southampton, Southampton is an academic hub for the talented and ambitious. Itchen College runs trips to local universities, giving students a taste of higher education, helping them to discover prospective pathways and find their future. Additionally, the Itchen hosts biannual university fairs, welcoming a multitude of south coast universities onto our campus to promote their courses directly to our students.

Southampton boasts great road and rail links to a number of major cities and airports across the country, and is just down the road from London.
A dynamic cultural scene epitomises the city’s entertainment, with one of the biggest theatres outside of London hosting daily productions, alongside cinemas, concert halls and festivals celebrating the diversity of the city. Indeed, this diversity is reflected in the cuisine, with a high street boasting multiple restaurants from every continent.
Southampton offers numerous parks and open spaces for students to unwind. From the historic Southampton Common to the beautiful New Forest National Park nearby, the city is surrounded by nature. Its coastal location also provides plenty of opportunities for water sports, sailing, and waterfront relaxation. One of the UK’s greenest cities, Southampton is a great place to stay active, with sports centres, gyms, cycle routes all in addition to the abundance of greenery.

Southampton is a very walkable and cyclable city, but a great public transport network extends across the city, offering affordable bus rides from A to B. We recommend students download the Bluestar App to keep an eye on live bus times, buy tickets and check timetables.
With regular public transport keeping the city connected, Southampton also has quick and easy road and rail links to a number of destinations in the UK.
