I credit everything to Itchen!
David’s journey to success began at Itchen Sixth Form College, where his parents and agency ENLAP encouraged him to pursue his goals in a place renowned for its excellent Computer Science programme.
“I credit everything to Itchen,” David says, reflecting on the significant role the college played in his academic and professional life. “I never would have got to university without all the support that Itchen gave me, and without university I never would have been able to set up my own business.”
He particularly remembers his IT teacher, Steph Cooke, as “a funny and lovely lady” who helped make his time at Itchen unforgettable.
During his year at Itchen, David studied a BTEC Level 3 Double Award in Computer Science alongside AS Maths and Physics. Despite only staying for one year, the rigorous course at Itchen allowed him to secure a place at university with just one A-Level. He went on to study at IMC Krems, a University of Technical Sciences in Austria, where he is now starting his Master’s degree.
David recalls Itchen as an incredibly friendly environment filled with bright, driven individuals, especially in the Physics and Maths departments.
“There were so many smart people, and we often had great technical discussions about Physics,” he shares. He remains in contact with many of his local friends, a testament to the lasting connections he made while at the college.
Today, David works full-time as a software engineer at TTTech Auto, one of the largest technology companies in Austria. In his role, he develops software and works on automation projects, building on the skills he first honed at Itchen. In addition to his work at TTTech, David also launched his own company two years ago, Arcadone, which develops innovative technology to encourage children to engage in real-life activities. One of their standout projects is HeroSpace LaserShot, a laser shooting simulator designed to get kids off screens and into active play using technology.
“Our aim is to get students off of their screens and into the real world… using technology,” David says passionately, the irony of the statement followed by a chuckle. “One of our new projects is gamification for events.”
Outside of academics, David has fond memories of his time with his host family, George and Dulce. Their shared love of golf led to daily rounds before class, a routine that became one of the highlights of his experience at Itchen. He also took part in the Academy of Golf at the college, which further fuelled his passion for the sport. He spoke highly of the Academy, and in particular, the coach, Mark.
“Mark was great. He’s a friendly guy. I loved that we had whole sessions dedicated to playing and perfecting golf. It really embellished my time here.”
David didn’t miss out on the social side of life at Itchen either. Through organised trips with the international school, he explored some of the UK’s iconic locations, including Bath, London, and the Isle of Wight. These experiences added to the richness of his time in Southampton.
His advice for current and future students? “Use the opportunity – take advantage of everything.” David’s story is a shining example of how Itchen’s diverse opportunities and supportive environment can lead to incredible success, both academically and professionally.
