Access to Higher Education (HE) (Full time course)
Introduction
The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification designed for adults aged 19+ who want to progress to university but may not have traditional qualifications. It offers an alternative route into higher education for those returning to education, looking to change career, or seeking a second chance to pursue a professional or graduate career.
At Itchen Sixth Form College, our Access to HE courses provide a supportive and flexible learning environment that prepares adult learners for the academic demands of university study.
Students can choose from a range of specialist diplomas aligned with high-demand professional sectors:
Each pathway combines subjects that develop both academic knowledge and the critical thinking skills needed for university study.
Subjects studied across these pathways include:
Course Overview
The full-time Access to HE course runs from September to June. During this time, students study three subjects within their chosen pathway, alongside Academic Study Skills, which help develop the research, writing and analytical skills required for higher education.
Each subject includes regular classroom teaching supported by independent study. Students are expected to complete additional work such as reading, research and assignment preparation outside of lessons. In total, the course requires approximately 25–30 hours of study per week.
Courses are taught by experienced tutors who are specialists in their subject areas, and students may also benefit from visiting speakers, enrichment activities and career-focused sessions linked to their chosen field.
To support adult learners balancing study with other commitments, classes may be available during the daytime or in the evening, depending on the pathway selected.
The Access to Higher Education Diploma is validated by Ascentis and is worth 60 credits, which are widely recognised by universities as a qualification for entry onto degree programmes.
What Will I Study?
Students complete academic study within the subjects that form part of their chosen pathway. These modules introduce key knowledge and concepts relevant to their future degree programmes while also helping them develop essential academic skills.
In addition to subject knowledge, students will build important study skills, including:
Students planning to progress to university will also receive support with their UCAS application, including guidance on writing a personal statement and preparing for interviews where required.
Entry Requirements
Applicants will normally need GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).
If you do not yet have these qualifications, it may be possible to study GCSE English or GCSE Maths alongside your Access course, subject to Tutor approval.
All applicants will complete an initial assessment and interview to ensure the course is suitable for their goals and academic readiness.
Materials
Students will need basic study materials such as pens, paper and access to a computer or laptop to complete research, coursework and assignments.
Progression
On successful completion of the Access to Higher Education Diploma, many students progress to university degree programmes related to their chosen pathway, including careers in healthcare, education, social services, counselling and law.
Students benefit from dedicated careers guidance and progression support, including advice on university choices, applications and career planning. The college also maintains strong links with universities to support students as they move on to higher education.
At Itchen, you will join a welcoming and inclusive community, where experienced staff provide personalised support every step of the way. Our Access to HE programme not only prepares you academically but also builds your confidence and study skills, setting you up for success at university and beyond.
The awarding organisation for all Access to HE qualification is Ascentis.
Teaching on the Access to Higher Education programme at Itchen Sixth Form College is delivered in a relaxed and supportive classroom environment, designed to help adult learners thrive.
Lessons are teacher-led with a strong focus on:
Core curriculum content
Developing academic research skills
Improving academic writing and referencing
Preparing for and completing assignments
All of this is excellent preparation for university-level study.
You’ll attend college two days or two evenings per week, which includes:
Four taught sessions
1 hour 40-minute tutorial/study skills session (once a week)
This structured timetable provides a balance of teaching and academic support. As many of our students are returning to education after a break, we offer extensive guidance to help you build confidence and effective study habits.
Outside of college hours, you’ll receive remote support and be expected to engage in independent study, including:
Reading academic articles, journals, and newspapers
Staying up to date with current affairs relevant to your chosen pathway
Preparing for and completing assessed coursework
Time management is vital—assessed work is submitted approximately every 10 weeks, and consistent effort is required throughout the course.
Assessment methods are varied and designed to reflect university expectations. These may include:
In-class tests
Academic posters
Research projects
Essays and formal reports
We will also fully support you with your UCAS application and personal statement, although this process does require additional time and commitment outside of your regular academic work.
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded an Access to Higher Education Diploma worth 60 Level 3 credits—accepted by 99% of UK universities.
At Itchen Sixth Form College, we place a strong emphasis on excellent attendance and punctuality, as these are key to academic success.
We expect all students to aim for 100% attendance, and attendance is recorded for every timetabled session.
If a student fails to attend for four consecutive weeks without making contact with the college, they may be withdrawn from the course.
If attendance falls below 80%, a student’s place on the course may be at risk.
We understand that health and personal circumstances can sometimes affect attendance. In such cases, we will respond sympathetically and may consider support options, including the college’s Fitness to Study Policy, where appropriate.
We ask all students to respect and adhere to these expectations in order to make the most of the opportunities the course offers.
