This qualification provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary, sixth form or special schools. It covers all aspects of Specialist Support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher, bilingual and special needs support, and personal development and reflective practice. It is suitable for anyone working in roles that offer specialist support for pupils’ learning. This course usually takes a year to complete.
You need to have a good level of literacy and ideally have a relevant level 2 qualification. You should also be in paid employment and have 18 months experience of working within a classroom.
You will need to do approximately 4 hours of home study per week
You will need to be in a paid employment within a classroom environment for at least 12 hours per week as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. You will also require the support of a workplace mentor during the course. Teaching will be fairly formal but with the emphasis on building on the knowledge that you already have. Delivery includes:

You are able to apply for an Advanced Learning Loan and can finance the £2225 course fee from this loan. Loans will need to be repaid but repayments will not start until you earn more than £25,000 per year. Loans are not income dependent and there are no credit checks.
