Why Choose Media Studies?

In a world dominated by digital media and communication, understanding the mechanics behind the messages we consume daily has never been more important. Media Studies at Itchen Sixth Form College offers a unique opportunity to critically analyse and engage with the media landscape, uncovering how it shapes society and influences our perceptions. This subject fosters creativity, critical thinking, and an appreciation of media’s powerful role in the modern world.

Whether you aspire to create, analyse, or influence, Media Studies will prepare you to become an active and informed participant in the media-rich environment we live in.

What You Will Explore

The A Level Media Studies course provides an in-depth look at:

  • Media language: the language of construction that defines how we read and understand a media product eg framing, shot types, colour symbolism
  • Media Representations: How gender, ethnicity, and class are portrayed across media products including films, advertising, and TV.
  • Media Industries: Exploring the power structures behind global media giants and independent creators.
  • Audience Engagement: Discovering how media targets, interacts with, and influences its audiences.
  • Values and ideology: Analysing case studies from various platforms including digital media such as video games and social media plus more traditional media like advertising, magazines and radio. Exploring media products and the historical and social context in which they were produced
  • Media Production: Hands-on coursework creation of your own media projects such as films, websites, or marketing campaigns. This will comprise 30% of your overall grade. During the coursework unit you will have the chance to use camera equipment and editing software to explore the possibilities of media language by producing your own media products. You will also explore the following:
    • How to engage an audience via creative organisation and selection of media language
    • Creating narrative for audience appeal
    • Understanding and replicating genre codes and conventions that define the user experience
    • Developing representation that meets the needs of an audience and reflects the social and cultural context
