Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs

The Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs is aimed at professionals working in education or carrying out a caring role in nursery nursing, teaching assistance, childcare or play work, and are looking to develop knowledge and understanding of Special Educational Needs to progress within the sector as part of a new or existing role.

Course Content:

You will study a range of units that may include:

  • Understanding the principles of Special Educational Needs
  • Legislation and guidance relating to SEN
  • Inclusive practice and removing barriers to learning
  • Supporting individuals with specific needs (e.g. autism, ADHD, dyslexia)
  • Working collaboratively with parents, carers, and professionals

Who is this course for?

  • Individuals working or volunteering in schools, colleges, or early years settings
  • Teaching assistants, learning support assistants, or aspiring SEN professionals
  • Anyone interested in enhancing their understanding of SEN to progress in the education sector

Delivery Mode: Classroom-based (evening course)

Assessment: Assessment is through a portfolio of evidence, which may include written assignments, case studies, and reflective accounts.

Home Study Requirements: You will need to study for approximately 6 hours per week at home

Awarding Body: NCFE

Entry Requirements:

  • A good level of English (Functional Skills Level 2 or GCSE Grade C/4 or above is recommended)
  • A keen interest in education and supporting learners with additional needs
  • No prior SEN experience required, though relevant work/voluntary experience is beneficial

Aged Under 24?

If you’re under 24, you may be eligible for government funding through the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) depending on your previous qualifications. This will be fully discussed at your enrolment interview.

 

Level 3 Free Courses for Jobs (formerly the National Skills Fund)

Our Level 3 Free Courses for Jobs programme provides funding for adults aged 19 and over who want to gain a Level 3 qualification to improve their career prospects or increase their earnings.

  • Who can apply:
    • Adults aged 19+ who do not already have a Level 3 qualification.
    • Adults who are unemployed or earning below the National Living Wage—even if they already have a Level 3 qualification or higher.

 

Advanced Learner Loan

An Advanced Learner Loan makes Level 3 study more accessible and affordable:

  • No up-front fees or credit checks are required to apply.
  • Available to adults aged 24 or over.
  • If you complete both your Access to HE Diploma and your university degree, your loan will be written off in full.
  • If you do not complete a degree, repayments only begin when you earn over £27,295 per year (threshold may change annually).
  • Repayments are automatically deducted at 9% of any income above the threshold.
