After more than three decades in further education, Itchen Sixth Form College Principal Alex Scott has announced his retirement. Under Alex’s leadership, the college has gone from strength to strength — achieving an Outstanding Ofsted rating in 2024 and earning recognition for its inclusive, high-achieving learning community.
Alex began his teaching career in 1992 as a newly qualified teacher at Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh. He quickly built a strong reputation for his dedication to students and commitment to high-quality teaching and learning, progressing to Assistant Principal in 2001.
In 2006, Alex joined Brockenhurst College as Vice Principal, playing a key role in curriculum development and raising standards. His proven leadership and passion for education led to his appointment as Principal of Itchen College in 2017.
Reflecting on his time at Itchen, Alex said:
“It’s been a privilege to lead such a talented and committed community at Itchen. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together and grateful to the staff, students, and governors who have made the college such a special place. I’m confident that under Rebecca’s leadership, Itchen will continue to thrive.”
When Alex joined the college, it had been graded Requires Improvement by Ofsted. Through clear vision, collaborative leadership, and an unwavering focus on students, he guided Itchen to its Outstanding Ofsted rating in 2024 — a testament to his leadership and the dedication of the staff team.
Alex is widely respected for his integrity, calm leadership, and genuine care for both students and staff. He will be greatly missed by the entire college community.
The College Governors have appointed Rebecca Stratton, currently Deputy Principal (Curriculum and Quality), as the new Principal of Itchen Sixth Form College.
Rebecca began her career in education as a History teacher at Oaklands Catholic School in Waterlooville in 2000. She went on to hold leadership positions at South Downs College, where she became Course Manager for History and later Head of Humanities, Social Sciences and Health. In 2016, Rebecca moved to Woking College as Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Quality before joining Itchen in 2018 as Deputy Principal.
Rebecca brings a wealth of experience, a deep understanding of the college’s ethos, and a strong commitment to maintaining the high standards achieved under Alex’s leadership.
Speaking about her appointment, Rebecca said:
“It’s an honour to be appointed Principal at Itchen College. We’re proud of our strong support for students and our close partnership with the local community. I look forward to building on Alex’s legacy and continuing to deliver excellent education for Southampton.”
