Exams and assessments are an important part of your child’s time at Itchen. We want students and their parents and guardians to understand what is expected and where to find the information and support they need.
The College’s Exams section provides information about upcoming examinations, results, certificates, exam forms and guidance for students and parents/carers.
Students are expected to meet the coursework and assignment deadlines set by their teachers.
Meeting deadlines is an important part of staying on track with a course. Failure to meet a deadline can, in some circumstances, result in coursework or an assignment not being accepted for marking.
Where a student is seriously ill, an extension may be possible in some circumstances. However, some deadlines are set externally and cannot be changed without appropriate evidence, such as a medical certificate.
If your child is struggling to meet a deadline, we encourage them to speak to their subject teacher as early as possible.
The College provides students with information and guidance to help them prepare for and take their examinations.
This includes information about:
Some students may be eligible for access arrangements or reasonable adjustments during examinations and assessments.
These arrangements are designed to remove barriers for eligible students and allow them to demonstrate their knowledge and skills fairly.
Examples of arrangements may include extra time, a reader, a scribe or use of a word processor, depending on the student’s individual needs and the relevant examination requirements.
If your child has previously received exam access arrangements at school, please make sure the College is aware of this when they join Itchen.
Access arrangements are considered and arranged through the College’s Support for Learning and Exams teams.
Students need to be familiar with the examination information provided by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ).
The College provides links to current JCQ guidance covering areas including:
Exam results are an important milestone for students and families.
The College publishes current information about when results are available and how students can collect or access them.
Results dates can vary depending on the qualification and examination series, so please use the College’s current Exams page for the latest information.
Certificates are available for collection from the Exams Office following the issuing of results.
Certificates are not posted because of their value and the risk of loss.
The College stores uncollected certificates for one year from the date they are issued, after which awarding bodies require them to be destroyed. Students should therefore make arrangements to collect their certificates promptly.
Exams can be stressful, particularly when students are balancing several subjects and assessments.
If your child is worried about an upcoming examination, encourage them to speak to their subject teacher, tutor or Student Support team.
Support is available to help students understand what is expected and identify any additional support they may need.
There are procedures in place for situations where illness, injury or other circumstances may affect a student’s ability to complete an examination or assessment.
Where appropriate, the College can consider arrangements such as access arrangements or applications for special consideration in line with the relevant examination regulations.
Students should speak to the Exams team as soon as possible if something happens that may affect their ability to sit or complete an examination.
The College has a dedicated section containing examination policies and information, including:
These detailed policies are available through the College’s Policies & Information section.
