Life at Itchen

College life is about more than lessons. Students have access to a range of facilities, study spaces, social areas and services designed to support their learning, wellbeing and experience at Itchen.

From specialist teaching spaces and the Learning Resource Centre to the Student Centre, café and sports facilities, there are plenty of places for students to learn, study, relax and spend time with friends.

Learning spaces

Itchen provides a range of specialist learning environments to support students across their courses.

Our facilities include:

  • Specialist teaching and practical spaces.
  • Learning Resource Centre.
  • Online textbooks and journals.
  • Quiet study spaces.
  • Independent study areas around the College.
  • Specialist facilities for Sport, Performing Arts and Visual Arts.
  • Industry-standard software and equipment.

The College continues to invest in and improve its teaching facilities.

Student Centre

The Student Centre is a central space for students during the College day.

It provides additional seating and space for students to use during independent study periods, as well as access to the College’s wellbeing hub.

The Student Centre is also home to cafe@Itchen, providing students with somewhere to eat, drink, study and socialise.

Food and catering

The College provides a range of food and drink options for students.

The main canteen offers:

  • Hot meals.
  • Grab-and-go options.
  • Filled rolls.
  • Salad boxes.
  • Jacket potatoes.
  • Drinks and snacks.

The College Shop also provides grab-and-go food, snacks and drinks.

The canteen and café accept cash, card and contactless payments.

Sport and fitness

Students have access to sports and fitness facilities as part of College life.

Facilities include:

  • Sports hall.
  • Gym and fitness facilities.
  • Specialist sports spaces.
  • Facilities used by the Sport Academy.

Some courses and activities also make use of external sports facilities in the local area.

Performing Arts and creative facilities

Students studying creative and performing subjects have access to specialist facilities, including:

  • Drama theatre.
  • Dance studio.
  • Main hall with seating and stage.
  • Radio studio.
  • Photography studio.
  • Textiles studio.
  • Graphics suite.
  • Music technology suite.
  • Soundproofed performance rooms.
  • Recording studio.

These facilities support students in developing practical skills and preparing for further study and employment.

Learning Resource Centre

The Learning Resource Centre provides students with access to resources to support their studies, including online textbooks and journals.

Students can also make use of study spaces around the College and the dedicated quiet study space provided through Support for Learning.

College Shop

The College Shop is open to students every day and provides refreshments, drinks and hot food.

It also provides access to course materials and resources where these are required for students’ studies.

Student ID cards and lanyards

All students are required to carry their College ID card and wear their College identity lanyard.

This helps the College maintain a safe environment and allows staff to identify students and visitors on campus.

Students receive their ID card as part of the enrolment process. If there is a problem with a student’s ID card or lanyard, they should speak to a member of staff.

IT, internet and Wi-Fi

Students are provided with an IT account when they enrol at College.

College computers provide access to the internet and email, and students can also use the College’s Wi-Fi facilities.

Students are expected to use College IT systems responsibly. Internet and email use on College equipment and the Eduroam Wi-Fi is monitored, and misuse may result in restrictions being placed on a student’s account or further action.

Mobile phones

Students are expected to have their mobile phones switched off during lessons, tutorials, lectures and talks unless a member of staff specifically asks them to use their phone as part of the learning activity.

Students are responsible for the safety of their own phones, and the College cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage.

Mobile phones are not permitted in examinations.

Nursery

Itchen also has an on-site nursery which is open to the public as well as students and staff.

A welcoming college environment

We want students to feel comfortable, supported and able to make the most of their time at Itchen.

Alongside their teaching spaces, students have access to areas where they can study independently, meet friends, eat and take a break during the College day.

The Student Centre and wellbeing hub also provide spaces where students can access support when they need it.
