Everyone belongs at Itchen

At Itchen, we want every student to feel welcome, respected and valued.

We are committed to creating an inclusive college community where students can learn, develop and achieve their potential, regardless of their background or circumstances.

We recognise and value the diversity of our students, staff and wider community, and we work to promote equality and challenge discrimination.

Our commitment

We are committed to:

  • Treating students, staff and visitors fairly and with dignity and respect.
  • Promoting equality of opportunity.
  • Valuing and celebrating diversity.
  • Creating an environment where everyone feels able to be themselves.
  • Challenging discrimination, harassment and prejudice.
  • Making sure students can access the support and opportunities they need to succeed.

The College’s current Equality & Diversity information states that Itchen is committed to treating people fairly and with dignity and respect, and to promoting equality and valuing diversity.

An inclusive college community

Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

We want students to feel that they belong at Itchen and that their individuality is respected.

We encourage students to:

  • Respect different opinions, backgrounds and experiences.
  • Treat others with kindness and dignity.
  • Challenge discrimination and inappropriate behaviour.
  • Speak to a member of staff if they are concerned about something.
  • Contribute positively to the College community.
Equality and the law

The College’s approach to equality is informed by the Equality Act 2010 and the protected characteristics set out in the legislation.

The College works to ensure that people are not unfairly discriminated against because of characteristics protected by law.

Tackling discrimination and harassment

We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment or behaviour that makes another member of our community feel unsafe or unwelcome.

If your child experiences or witnesses behaviour that concerns them, they should speak to someone at College.

They can talk to:

  • Their tutor.
  • A teacher.
  • Student Support.
  • A member of the safeguarding team.
  • Any other member of staff they feel comfortable approaching.

Parents and guardians can also contact the College if they have concerns.

Supporting your child

If your child tells you that they have experienced discrimination, bullying or behaviour that concerns them, please encourage them to speak to someone at College.

You can also contact us directly if you believe your child needs support.

We will listen to the concern and make sure it is passed to the appropriate member of staff.

Equality, diversity and student life

Our commitment to equality and inclusion is reflected across College life, including:

  • Teaching and learning.
  • Student support.
  • Careers and progression.
  • College activities and events.
  • Access to facilities and opportunities.
  • The wider College community.

We want every student to have the opportunity to participate fully in College life and achieve their ambitions.
