We want parents and guardians to understand how their child is progressing at Itchen and how they can support them throughout their studies.
Your child’s progress is monitored closely throughout the year. Students receive a series of progress grades in each of their courses, giving them and their parents an indication of the grade they are working at at different points during the academic year.
These progress grades are an important way of understanding how your child is progressing, but they are not necessarily a prediction of the final grade they will achieve at the end of their course.
Students’ progress is measured against their Aspirational Target Grade (ATG) using the College’s progress tracker.
ATGs for A Level, vocational and other courses are calculated using a national database. For other courses, ATGs are based on a combination of students’ average GCSE grades and their current standard of work.
The progress tracker helps teachers and tutors identify where a student is making expected progress and where additional support may be needed.
Progress grades give an indication of the grade at which your child is currently working at a particular point in the academic year.
It is important to remember that a progress grade is not a final result or a guaranteed prediction of the grade your child will achieve.
Students have time to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding throughout their course, and progress can change as they continue to learn.
If a student is identified as underachieving, appropriate action and support will be put in place.
Depending on the student’s individual needs, this may include working with a Progress Mentor or accessing support through the Support for Learning team.
Teachers and tutors will work with students to identify areas for improvement and help them understand what they can do to make further progress.
Students have regular opportunities to review their progress with their teachers and tutors.
These reviews help students to:
Parents and guardians are kept informed about their child’s progress and are encouraged to take an interest in these discussions.
The College also holds Review Days, when students attend short one-to-one appointments with their teachers to discuss their progress.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend these appointments where possible.
Review Days provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress directly with their teachers, celebrate achievements and identify any areas where additional support may be helpful.
Parents and guardians can use the Parent & Guardian Portal (ProPortal) to view information about their child’s progress and attendance.
ProPortal provides parents with access to progress information and student reviews, helping you stay informed throughout the year.

If you have concerns about your child’s progress, their tutor is usually the best first point of contact.
Tutors can help you understand how your child is progressing and, where necessary, identify the appropriate support.
You can also use ProPortal to check your child’s progress and attendance before contacting the College.
