This morning, Itchen College held a deeply moving Remembrance Assembly, attended by a packed audience of students and staff. The assembly, designed to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served in conflicts past, featured a compelling presentation by former staff member Hilary Wilson, titled Per Ardua ad Astra—the motto of the Royal Air Force, which means “Through Adversity to the Stars.”
Hilary’s presentation captivated the audience, focusing on the proud history of the RAF and the tremendous sacrifices made by men and women who served during the two World Wars. Her insights drew a personal connection between history and the college, as she recounted how Southampton, including the nearby Itchen and Woolston areas, was significantly impacted by bombings during the Second World War. She shared that the very hall where the assembly took place once served as a First Aid and medical station during that period, offering students and staff a unique glimpse into the wartime history embedded in their surroundings.
The event also included a moment of silence, giving everyone present a chance to reflect personally on the sacrifices made by those who served.
Today’s gathering not only remembers those who gave their lives but also reminds us of our community’s shared history and strength. I am proud of our students for engaging with such respect and understanding.
