When Beatrice first arrived at Itchen Sixth Form College, the main factor influencing her decision to come here was her English.
“I needed to improve, I didn’t have much confidence,” she says, her words belying her newfound fluency.
Beatrice’s experience at Itchen proved to be a transformative one, both personally and academically.
One of the most significant parts of Beatrice’s journey was the friendships she built during her time at the college. The supportive environment, coupled with the warm welcome from her host family, particularly her host, Tracey, made her time in Southampton truly special.
“Staying with Tracey was a beautiful experience. We created a beautiful friendship,” Beatrice recalls. “We’re still in touch and I surprised her today with a visit!”
Her time at Itchen became a journey of self-discovery. She embraced the differences in culture and lifestyle, learning to love what she described as her “new reality.” Alongside her studies, she made the most of her time in the UK by exploring its rich history and vibrant cities. During her first half term, she visited Bath, Liverpool, Cardiff, Glasgow, and Edinburgh – a testament to her adventurous spirit. However, it was Southampton that became her sanctuary. She appreciated the city’s relaxed pace and the excellent balance it provided between work, life, and study.
“Life here felt less stressful, I have more time to relax, and I had an incredible support network of people who listen to me, especially with my host family and the teachers and my friends,” Beatrice explains. “I miss Southampton every day.”
Academically, Beatrice thrived in the nurturing environment of Itchen. She credits her teachers for motivating her and believing in her potential.
“The teachers here inspire you and push you to achieve your best,” she says.
It was this encouragement that helped Beatrice secure a job as a waiter in a hotel in Italy, giving her valuable work experience after her time at Itchen.
Now, Beatrice is studying Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals back in Italy, a path that she feels was made possible thanks to the confidence and skills she gained during her time at the college. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the opportunities that await students at Itchen.
