Law & Legal Work

This course covers fundamental aspects of law and the legal system, including:

• The Legal System – Learn about the structure of the UK legal system, including courts, judges, and the role of Parliament.
• Criminal and Civil Law – Understand the differences between these two areas of law and how cases are handled.
• Legal Rights and Responsibilities – Explore how laws protect individuals and businesses, covering contracts, employment law, and consumer rights.
• The Role of Legal Professionals – Gain insight into careers in law, from solicitors and barristers to paralegals and legal assistants.

The course consists of three units:

• An Introduction to the English legal system – this unit introduces the English legal system to you. It is the core unit of the qualification and its focal point. It seeks to provide the necessary basic information about the operation of the English legal system and the language of the law.
• Police Powers – the aim of this unit is to give an introduction to the running of the police service and their powers in the community
• Criminal Law – the aim of this unit is to introduce you to the role of criminal law in England and Wales. The unit takes a broad approach and concentrates on a range of offences, and consequences of criminal behaviour.

You will further develop your legal terminology, skills and knowledge relevant to identifying criminal behaviour and consequences, and the ability to apply the law to situations.
