Why Choose Life Drawing?
Life drawing is an inspiring and essential subject for anyone passionate about art and wanting to develop their creative abilities. Studying life drawing at Itchen Sixth Form College allows students to deepen their understanding of human anatomy, enhance their technical skills, and express their artistic vision through a variety of media. Whether you aim to pursue a career in art, design, illustration, or beyond, life drawing is the foundation of many creative practices and offers both personal and professional growth. By exploring the human form in great detail, students develop the technical expertise and artistic flair that set them apart in any creative field.

What You Will Explore?

In your first year (Level 2), you will explore the fundamental principles of life drawing, focusing on the study of the human body through observation, practice, and experimentation. You’ll develop your skills through a variety of drawing techniques, including charcoal, pencil, ink, and digital media. You will explore the relationship between anatomy and artistic expression, discovering the dynamics of the human figure and how to depict it accurately and creatively.

You will complete the following Level 2 units:

  • Unit 1: investigating sources of ideas in art and design
  • Unit 2: exploring and using art and design materials, techniques and visual language
  • Unit 3: producing final art and design work
  • Unit 5: building an art and design portfolio
  • Unit 7: 2D visual communication

With these units forming a grounded foundation you may take the second year and cover units 1, 2 and 3 in far more depth to gain a Level 3 qualification.

In your second year (Level 3), you will refine your life drawing skills further and expand your artistic knowledge. You’ll explore advanced techniques and creative methods, including mixed media, expressive drawing, and the integration of personal style. There will be opportunities to experiment with new approaches to figure drawing and to develop a portfolio that reflects your individuality as an artist. As you progress, you will also engage with contemporary approaches to life drawing, helping to contextualise your practice in the wider world of art and design.

Skills You Will Develop

Through your studies in life drawing, you will develop a broad range of artistic and technical skills, including:

  • Drawing techniques: Mastering the use of various materials (charcoal, pencil, ink, pastels, etc.) and experimenting with different media to create expressive and accurate depictions of the human form.
  • Anatomical knowledge: Understanding human anatomy, proportion, and movement to improve the accuracy and fluidity of your work.
  • Composition and design: Developing the ability to create well-balanced, engaging, and dynamic compositions.
  • Observation and attention to detail: Enhancing your ability to closely observe the human figure, translating visual information into detailed, dynamic representations.
  • Creative problem-solving: Developing your own artistic voice by experimenting with different styles, perspectives, and techniques.

The skills you develop in life drawing are highly transferable and can be applied across many creative disciplines. Some of the transferable skills include:

  • Attention to detail: Life drawing teaches you to focus on the finer details, a skill that can be applied to a range of careers where precision is key.
  • Communication and visual storytelling: Through drawing, you learn to convey messages visually, an essential skill for careers in advertising, marketing, and digital media.
  • Critical thinking and reflection: By evaluating your own work and the works of others, you enhance your ability to think critically, which is essential in any profession.
  • Time management: Life drawing projects often require deadlines and time constraints, helping students develop strong organisational skills.
