Criminology

This course introduces key topics within criminology, including:

• Understanding Crime and Deviance – Explore what crime is, why people commit it, and how society defines deviant behaviour.
• The Criminal Justice System – Learn about the roles of the police, courts, and prisons in dealing with crime.
• Types of Crime – Examine different crimes, from street crime and gang-related offences to digital and financial crimes.
• Crime Prevention and Punishment – Understand how laws are enforced, the role of punishment, and alternative methods of crime prevention.
• The Role of the Media in Crime – Investigate how crime is portrayed in the media and its impact on public perception.

You will study two units:

In Unit 1, you will be looking at: The difference between crime and deviance. Different types of crime such as corporate crime white collar crime, street crime and organised crime. The main features of biological, psychological and sociological explanations of crime. Evaluate main sources of crime data.

In Unit 2, you will be looking at: The main features of the criminal justice system in particular, the prison service. The relationship between crime and gender, ethnicity, social class and age. The relationship between criminal justice and the media, homicide, drugs, anti-social behaviour and terrorism.
